Nestled on the Banks Peninsula 75kms from Christchurch is Akaroa, a tiny town known for its heritage and French influence. Situated in the heart of an ancient volcano, the town’s strong European ties are evident in its colonial architecture and galleries. The dramatic blue bays that surround it complete this charming Cantabrian town.
It is Akaroa, for its beauty and history, that lent its name to New Zealand’s sleek new freestanding fire. A dramatic step away from what has typically been favoured by Kiwis for decades, the Akaroa fire introduces a tall, radiant fire with an elegant cylindrical shape and European lines.
“Kiwis have really favoured the humble black box for freestanding fires for a long time now so this is something new to the market,” Masport Heating’s Paul Davies says. “We’re starting to see a shift in people’s perceptions about fires, and the Akaroa was designed to meet the market.”
Typically, choosing a freestanding fire hasn’t been a difficult task – because most options resemble each other in their rectangular box-like form. Cylindrical fires add a point of difference to a room, and due to their versatility can fit into smaller spaces than the typical rectangular box.
“The Akaroa adds the ambience of a fire but is also a unique design element in any space with its sleek European lines and curvature,” Paul says. “We’ve been developing this design for some time now to create something more and push the boundaries of what is possible with fire design.”
Not all fires are suitable for all settings though, with radiant fires operating very differently to convection fires. “With a radiant fire, two thirds of the heat generated from that fire is transferred directly into the room,” Paul says. “So, as soon as you light a radiant fire, you’ll instantly feel the benefit of heat coming into the room making the Masport Akaroa Radiant Wood Burner a very versatile solution for numerous house design options.”
Convection fires work differently, sending heat upwards, which then works its way along the ceiling before edging down into the room to heat it. As such, convection fires generally aren’t suitable for older houses with high ceilings as they can be ineffective.
There’s also the issue of new fires meeting New Zealand low emission environmental test standards, of which there are three; the national standard (NES), the Canterbury standard
(ECAN), and the Otago (Air shed 1) standard. Paul outlines “The Akaroa meets all three, although householders are advised to consult their respective local authority for regional compliance criteria”.
Wood fires remain a sustainable form of heating, and one that creates an unparalleled ambience. Unlike other fuels, wood is a carbon neutral product, generating no more carbon dioxide in the process of burning that if left to decompose naturally, Paul says, “Many freestanding fires also provide an alternative cooking source – the Akaroa has a 6mm radiant steel cook top allowing people to utilise the fire for cooking in the case of power cuts”.
